This meditation practice helps to collapse any unhealthy coping strategies or activities of avoidance and guides you to resource what you truly need.
Almost everyone “copes” to some degree in their life. Sometimes it is important to just be a human, do human things and enjoy simple connections and experiences. This helps you ground inside your body and anchors you in your experience. It’s okay to choose activities that take our minds off our issues so you can enjoy the moment.
Coping strategies become an issue when we consistently choose the coping mechanisms to avoid addressing the issues we have and sometimes coping becomes unhealthy whether you are able to acknowledge this or not. Coping may help get you through certain experiences but if they become a habitual way of being, the root of the issue is not truly being addressed.
Briefly view this list of potential unhealthy coping anchors and strategies and notice if you participate in any to deal with life. Some may be more conscious than others. You may participate in more than one but there may be one that you engage in that is more unhealthy or driven by hidden motives that you may not even understand. Your coping strategy may or may not be on this list, but let it come to mind now, the one you need to focus on collapsing for your greatest good. When you are ready, begin the meditation.
As you reflect on this list, attempt to maintain neutrality and witness from a place of non-judgement. Remember any activity, habit or choice can become unhealthy or toxic especially if it is used to avoid, not feel, etc.
As you reflect, notice if you are defensive over a certain item on this list or if a part of you tries to justice why you doing your habit isn't unhealthy for you. This may happen consciousness or unconsciously so be open.
Is there any strategy not on this list that you may be using right now in your life?
Is this strategy unhealthy, controlling you or constricting how you engage with and experience life?
