04. Understanding Meridians and Your Body Clock

Meridians are located throughout your body serving as pathways of positive and negative energy facilitating communication and connectivity throughout your whole being. These meridians have been measured and napped by modern technology methods electronically, thermally and radioactively. With practice and awareness, the meridians can be felt.

Along the meridians are specific acupuncture points that are electromagnetic in character. These small palpable spots can be located by hand with micro electrical voltage meters. Acupuncture points form connections between the positive and negative meridians and functions of the body including the internal organs and muscles. There are some 500 points that have been mapped which have been used for centuries to bring specific improvements in energy flow and human performance.

Meridian's are named for the life function with which they are associated. There are 12 paired meridians on each side of the body.

Meridians are classified as Yin or Yang on the basis of the direction in which they flow on the surface of the body.

Each pair has a 2 hour window in which they are most active, represented in the image below.

In addition to the 12 pairs, there are two midline meridians (central and governing). The central meridian flows from the pubic bone up the center of the body to the lower lip, while the governing meridian flows from the tailbone up the spine over the top of the head to the upper lip. Unlike the 12 pairs, these do not fluctuate with the body's 24-hour clock and are more akin to storage batteries for the meridian energies.

The meridian cycle is a continuous unbroken pathway of energy that flows in one definite direction from one meridian to another in a well-determined order. Throughout the course of the day and night each meridian reaches a peak of energy one after another in the same order.

When this energy flow is unrestricted the body harmonizes to optimize body functioning. If there are imbalances, there can be meridian overloads or decreased energy running through the circuits corresponding to dysfunction in the organs and systems of the body.

Generally, during the peak time for each meridian:

  • If symptoms appear or increase, this may mean the meridian is processing too much energy. Excess energy overloads the system and needs to be reduced to bring into balance.
  • If there is excessive fatigue or a sedative feeling during a meridian’s peak time, this may mean there is deficient energy flow and needs to be increased to bring balance.

If you feel called to work with your meridians, browse the options below or use your testing technique to determine what practice is best to support you right now.

  1. To support your overall meridian health, doing a whole body meridian trace can be very powerful.
  2. Use the Body Clock Self-Reflection to help you determine what meridians are best for you to focus on.
  3. There are times when an entire meridian can be tapped to support its overall alignment and sometimes only specific points are needed to focus on.
    • As if energy were stuck on a highway and the bottlenecked area cleared, opening the traffic and flow. Appropriate stimulation of a few points has the potential to align you whole system.
    • If you are comfortable using your testing technique, you may determine the specific type of  input your meridian system needs and what meridian(s) to focus on.
    • Use the Meridian Alignment Technique to have step by step guidance for this process.
