08. Humor Practice

Humor plays a powerful role in the healing process! Sometimes we take life too seriously and we forget the restorative qualities of a good laugh.

During dark times and illness, humor can act as a shield to protect your heart and soul. Aiming to “keep a light heart” can do wonders for defending yourself. On a physical level, humor lowers your stress and calms the circuitry in your brain and nervous system.

Browse the following 9 options to bring humor into your life or use your testing technique to determine what humor practice will best serve you right now.

  1. Setting your intention such as with the following statements or affirmations daily can be enormously powerful in helping you tap into your humor.
    • State them out loud and/or write them down.

      • I am going to build upon my humor!
      • I am going to smile and laugh freely today!
      • I laugh easily!
      • I have a sense of humor!
      • I smile often!
  2. When was the last time you fully laughed or let yourself have a full body laughing experience? Can you bring up that experience now and experience laughter?
  3. Pretend to laugh and make up funny laughs to get your laughing going. Then just enjoy aimlessly laughing.
  4. Spread your arms up, pointed to the sky, with your head tilted a little back or with your chin raised and laugh heartily. Direct your laughter to come straight from your belly and  heart.
  5. Make a funny noise, sound or voice imitation that makes you laugh.
  6. Spend some time with your pet, another’s pet or in nature observing how animals exhibit humor.
  7. Reflect on where in your life you reject humor or have a hard time "keeping things light". How may you take a new perspective to bring humor into that part of your life or a challenging experience.
  8. Other. How else can you integrate a humor practice into your life?
