01. Sidelying Lateral Thorax Expansion

This PRI based technique is excellent at giving your body the opportunity to experience right lateral chest wall expansion while closing down the left, inviting more balance and alignment to your body.

Due to the inherent asymmetry of the body, the side of your right rib cage tends to be more compressed while the left more open.

Equipment Needed:

  • 2 Pillows; 1 folded in half and another to fully support your head and neck.

Instructions:

  1. Lay on your left side with a pillow rolled up under your waist (not under your ribs).
  2. Flex your bottom left hip and knee 90 degrees.
  3. Straighten your top right leg so it is in alignment with your body.
  4. Reach over your head with your right arm and rest your right hand on the floor. If this is uncomfortable, place it on a pillow or supportive material.
  5. Elongate your top right leg as if you were getting taller on that side of your body.
  6. Inhale softly, slowly and fully through your nose, noticing your right front and side rib cage expand.
  7. Exhale completely through pursed lips noticing your bottom left abdominals engaging.
  8. Pause until you feel a mild urge to breathe again and repeat for a total of 5 breath cycles.
  9. Complete 3-4 sets of 5 breath cycles. You may do this on the other side as desired, but always start and finish laying on your left side so that you are opening the right and closing the left side of your rib cage.

Perform 1-3x/day, for the next 3-5 days. *Unless otherwise directed.

    • Optionally, use your testing technique to determine your optimal frequency and duration to perform.

Goals:

  • During inhalation, sense your right front and side rib cage expand.
  • During exhalation, sense your left abdominals activate and draw in towards your body.
