07. Handling Hunger During Detox

One of the most common complaints one has when starting out the process of eliminating troublemaker foods, beverages and substances, reducing fat and protein and increasing fruits, vegetables and leafy greens is frequent hunger.

Constant hunger is a sign of any or all of the following:

  • Your liver is overburdened and filled with chronic pathogens and toxins and thus working extremely hard going through lots of glucose (its primary fuel). Now that you are creating optimal healing conditions for your liver, it is demanding even more glucose to provide enough energy to accomplish these complex detoxification tasks. This is why it is critical to eat more frequently and higher volumes of fruits, vegetables and leafy greens.
  • You are used to eating a diet high in fat/protein and thus higher calories. In order to keep up with your caloric needs on a primarily carbohydrate diet, you need to have a substantially higher volume of food which you might not be accustomed to. For those who traditionally eat higher fat/protein content but smaller portions, it may take time for your stomach to get used to eating higher volumes of food. In these situations, you may need to more gradually decrease your fat/protein and increase your fruit, vegetable and leafy greens content.
  • You are still eating too much fat/protein and not providing adequate glucose to your cells hence the hunger signaling.
  • You are consuming too much caffeine (coffee, tea (unless herbal) or chocolate) and stimulating your adrenals to produce adrenaline which interferes with consistent blood sugar regulation.

To address these issues, the following are recommended:

Keep in mind that healing and the detoxification process can take awhile, especially if you have been experiencing symptoms for a long time. It can involve some unpleasant healing reactions and trial and error to figure out what works best for you.
