19. Gargling

This technique helps to activate your parasympathetic nervous system, which helps to keep you calm and relaxed. When you are in this state you are better able to sleep and digest. It can also help to clear the nasal passages so you can more easily breathe through your nose as nasal breathing is the primary, preferred way to breathe vs mouth breathing.

Instructions:

  1. Place water in your mouth, tilt your head back bringing the water to your throat.
  2. Start to gargle the water. You can make a “gahugh” type of sound to begin the gargle and then continue to let your throat vibrate and shake the water.
  3. When you inhale through your nose you may have to pause your gargle to breathe and then start the gargle again on your exhale.
  4. Gargle for 10-30 sec and work up to doing it for 1-3 minutes at a time. Then spit out the water.

Perform 1-3x/day or as often as desired. *Unless otherwise directed

  • Optionally, use your testing technique to determine your optimal frequency and duration to perform.
  • Bonus Tip: If you have a sore throat, gargle with warm salt water.
