16. Brock String Eye Convergence

This technique helps your visual system to appropriately converge and be able to more accurately locate objects in space with both eyes working as a team. This helps both your day to day functioning but also enhances your eye-hand coordination for sports performance. We would like to acknowledge the late Robert Jacobs, OD who taught us this awesome exercise.

It can be particularly helpful to do this technique before any ball related sport requiring hand/eye coordination.

Instructions:

  1. Purchase a 10 foot brock string here.
  2. Attach the other end of the string to something so that it will be about eye level to you. Another person could be holding the other end of the string and performing this activity simultaneously as you do.
  3. Move the closest bead about 1 foot away from your end, the other beads evenly distributed throughout the string with the last bead at the other end (or 1 foot from the end if another person is performing at the same time).
  4. Place your end of the string up to your nose.
  5. Ground yourself by inhaling through your nose and exhaling fully through pursed lips getting all the air out of your lungs. Your knees should be unlocked while you press your heels and arches into the ground sensing the muscles in the back of your legs engage.
  6. Focus on the first bead. You should see two strings leading up the bead and crossing at the bead. If you have convergence issues, you may only see 1 string and/or the strings may cross in front or behind the actual bead.
  7. Set your intention to see both strings before the bead and to have them cross at the bead while you breathe (inhaling through nose and fully exhaling through pursed lips) for 2-3 breath cycles.
  8. Repeat this for each subsequent bead until you reach the last bead and then return back to the closest bead.
  9. Complete 1-2 cycles at a time.

Perform 1-2x/day, 2-3x/week. *Unless otherwise directed.

    • Optionally, use your testing technique to determine your optimal frequency and duration to perform.
