03. Back Sensory Desensitization #1

This sensory integration technique is aimed at reducing excess tension in your back. You will need a partner to help you with this technique.

Equipment needed:

  • Pillow or cushion for comfort as needed

Instructions:

  1. Lay on your side using a pillow or cushion in front of your belly and chest for support and comfort. It is best to have your full back exposed without any bra if possible.
  2. Optional to be in this full body flexion position.
  3. Using a flat broad finger contact with moderate pressure, your partner will slowly stroke along the TOP SIDE of your spinal column from the base of your neck (top of purple/T1 section) down to your sacrum (in green on diagram). You may experience a ticklish sensation.
    • If you are too hypersensitive your partner will need to apply more pressure and go at a slower pace.
  4. Complete 8x and then lay on your other side to repeat stroking on the top side of your spinal column.
    • Use slow paced stroking with the same amount of pressure each time.

Perform 1x/day, every other day for 2 weeks and then as often as desired or needed. *Unless otherwise directed.

  • Optionally, use your testing technique to determine your optimal repetitions, frequency and duration to perform.

Goals:

  • Tolerate comfortably and desensitize any hypersensitivity, uncomfortable or ticklish sensations.
