09. 2 Elastic Hold

With the tip of your tongue on the spot (just behind the front teeth), the body of your tongue should be in contact with the edges of your palate and just inside your top molar teeth extending all the way back to your soft palate.

There is typically a space on the very top of your palate where there will not be contact. Most people tend to be missing contact with the back of the tongue on the back of the palate, the soft palate. Usually this is connected to having a tongue tie and may require stretching and/or a frenectomy.

Instructions:

  1. Bring the tip of the tongue to rest on the spot shown in the first photo and lift the back of the tongue up to rest on the spot in the second photo.
  2. A great way to help train this posture is to use small elastic bands (like what is typically used in orthodontic braces here.
  3. Place one elastic on the front of your tongue and up on the spot and with another elastic on the back of your tongue where it contacts your soft palate. Make sure you don’t swallow the elastic!
  4. Hold your tongue on these spots with the elastic bands when you are not eating or talking.
  5. Start at 1 minute of holding if it challenges you and take breaks as needed. This can be done for up to 45 min at a time. Be careful not to swallow the elastic band.

Perform 1-2x/day or as often as needed until it becomes habitual. *Unless otherwise directed

  • Optionally, use your testing technique to determine your optimal frequency and duration to perform.
