The amazing healing benefits of celery juice were brought to our attention by the Medical Medium and can be read about in detail in this entire book he dedicated just to celery juice.
To summarize its healing highlights, celery juice can:
- Reduce digestive problems such acid reflux, SIBO and bloating by helping to reverse what is ultimately causing it:
- Low hydrochloric acid and bile production resulting in a proliferation of pathogens and poorly digested food rotting away in your gut.
- Eliminate pathogens in your body such as viruses and bacteria by breaking them down and flushing them out of your body. This ultimately helps you heal from:
- Any type of “autoimmune disease” (which are really caused by underlying toxins and pathogens)
- Chronic acne, SIBO, UTIs, yeast infections/bacterial vaginosis and even sinus infections due to the underlying strep that tends to camp out in these areas.
- Support your liver in detoxification efforts
- Restore your adrenal glands
- And so much more!
Because celery juice is so powerful at detoxifying the problematic pathogens and toxins in your body that are causing your symptoms, if you have a high underlying pathogen and toxin load and/or are sensitive, celery juice can potentially be too much for your body to handle. You may actually experience an increase in your symptoms when attempting it.
Why do you feel worse when you are trying to feel better with celery juice?
The pathogens living in your body ultimately want to survive. As celery juice begins to kill them off, there can be a die-off type of reaction from their dead waste byproduct and/or they may respond by producing irritating toxins. This can result in bloating, abdominal discomfort, increased urinary urgency, pain, more acne, etc. In a way, this is an effective survival strategy for them as such symptoms typically make someone decide that celery juice isn’t working for them and give up on it.
Viruses are inherently neurotrophic. This means they love to live in your nervous system. If you happen to have underlying viruses in the nerves along your intestines or even within your vagus nerve (which controls much of your digestion) this could be a source of discomfort or pain as your body attempts to eradicate them. This also includes any other nerves in your body such as your legs, arms, neck, back, head and face which can be experiencing symptoms such as pain, tingling, numbness, burning, etc.
The bottom line is that your symptoms might actually increase while attempting celery juice. What’s the best way to mitigate this?
Celery Juice Side Effects Solutions
The first step is to consider if you are consuming too much celery juice. The average dosage is 16 oz going all the way up to 32 oz and sometimes even 2x a day. However, some may need to start with as little as 1 oz! If you are experiencing detox symptoms from celery juice it is recommended to reduce your dose in half and continue to do so until you find a tolerable amount. HOWEVER, if you are not able to tolerate even 1 oz, then it’s time to try some other strategies.
Instead of celery juice, consider cucumber juice which is very alkalizing, hydrating and soothing to your system, particularly your stomach. Cucumber juice is also great at reducing bloating, swelling and lymphatic congestion.
Give aloe vera a chance to work its calming magic on you, particularly your digestive system. Aloe is alkalizing in addition to boosting the elimination of toxins and pathogens from your body.
- Aloe can be taken in a number of different ways:
- Directly from the plant. Make sure it’s the edible kind found in your grocery store. Take about 2 inches of the inner gel (not the fibrous outer portion) and mix in your smoothie, juice or whatever your delivery vehicle of preference is. You can add it to 8-16 oz of water as well for simplicity.
- 6-10 oz per serving of bottled juice such as:
- Aloe Vera Shock Therapy: Consume 2-4 inches of fresh aloe vera gel or a bottled serving every 2-4 waking hours for 1-7 days.
If after trying the above and you are still experiencing symptoms, pain and/or digestive woes you may need to consider doing a Mono Eating Cleanse where you focus on eating a single food for at least 1 week to truly be effective.
- Hydration:
-
- Optional: Immediately upon waking, drink 16-32 oz of lemon water (½ lemon/16 oz water). If the lemon is irritating, do not add it.
- Drink 16-32 oz of cucumber juice in the morning.
- Over the course of the day, drink at least 32 oz of water, preferably lemon water, if tolerated.
- Optional: Cucumber juice or coconut water (not any pink or red varieties)
- Meals: Pick just one of the following food options and consume multiple small meals (3-5 typically) of the food throughout the day choosing a serving size that satiates you. Don’t allow yourself to become too hungry in between. If doing lettuce, butter lettuce is recommended as it is the softest.
-
-
- Steamed Potatoes with optional lettuce
- Helps with loose stools/diarrhea, too frequent stools
- Good for ulcers, burning stomach pain
-
- Other Important Tips:
- Do not add or use any salt, seasonings or spices.
- The above food options contain just the right amount of nutritious qualities to sustain and heal you. You do not need to worry about getting enough protein or fat while on this diet.
- Some individuals may need to mono cleanse for longer than 1 week depending on the severity of their symptoms.
- When transitioning out of a mono cleanse, it is recommended to stay away from troublemaker foods such as gluten, dairy, eggs, corn and soy and have very little fat for a while. When you are ready to re-introduce fat, do ~ ¼ of an avocado with steamed vegetables at the end of the day.
- For more information refer to Cleanse to Heal p. 188-213.
If the above suggestions still do not help your tolerance, it is recommended to take a break from celery juice and give it another try in a few months. Your body might need some time to heal in certain ways before it is ready for it.
