A core driver of suffering, dis-ease and incoherent resonance is an underlying belief that you are not safe. This chronic sense of threat often develops from unresolved physical, emotional, mental or ancestral trauma. Whether the trauma is past or still unfolding, the body can remain locked in survival mode long after the danger has ended.
How Trauma Triggers Survival Physiology
When trauma occurs, the body shifts into a multi-level protective state. Dr. Robert K. Naviaux, a leading researcher known for the “Cell Danger Response,” has shown that persistent trauma triggers a universal cellular reaction to threat, stress or injury. The cell membrane hardens, ATP is released into the extracellular space which lowers energy production, innate immunity activates and the gut microbiome shifts. Ideally this response is temporary and resolves when healing is complete. When the process is interrupted, the pattern becomes chronic and generates symptoms such as fatigue, fragmented sleep, pain, hypersensitivity to light and sound and withdrawal from social engagement.
This aligns with Polyvagal Theory which explains how perceived threat reduces vagal tone and disrupts emotional and physiological regulation. When your system does not feel safe, your mood, sleep, digestion, energy, immunity, sensitivity and pain experience all become dysregulated. A vicious cycle forms where lack of safety keeps you stuck in survival physiology.
Is the Threat Real or Perceived?
A vital part of trauma healing is recognizing whether the threat is still present or only being perceived as present. With trauma from surgery, injury, abuse, adverse childhood experiences or PTSD, the original danger has passed but the body-heart-mind-soul still reacts as if it is happening now. These parts of you need to learn you are safe, assuming you are no longer in actual danger.
There are also situations where the threat is ongoing yet unnoticed. This includes pathogenic or chemical stressors that quietly activate the trauma response at a cellular level.
Hidden Threats That Keep the System Stuck
Chronic viral and bacterial infections are key hidden threats that can maintain your system in a continuous survival response. Many of these infections go undetected because standard medical tests focus on blood, urine and stool rather than tissue cultures of critical organs like the brain, nervous system or other tissues where pathogens may quietly reside. In addition, multiple strains of pathogens are likely unrecognized. A negative lab result does not guarantee that a persistent infection is absent, leaving the body-heart-mind-soul on high alert even when no obvious signs are present.
Chemical exposure adds another layer of chronic stress. Studies show hundreds of pollutants in umbilical cord blood and reveal that a significant portion of a mother’s chemical load is passed to her child. These accumulated toxins contribute to intergenerational trauma patterns, reinforcing the body’s sense of ongoing threat.
When symptoms such as dysregulated mood, sleep, immunity, autonomic function, digestion, energy or pain persist, it becomes essential to ask: What is actively feeding the trauma response? Which stressors are truly present, and which are echoes from the past still being replayed in the body? Recognizing these hidden threats is a critical step in restoring safety and initiating deep, systemic healing.
