01. Right Nostril Occlusion

Use this easy technique to support your nervous system regulation and more comfortably experience the present moment.

Did you know your right and left nostrils are different and that the right is typically more associated with sympathetic or "fight or flight" tone while the left is characterized by more parasympathetic "rest and digest" tone? Occluding your right nostril dampens the input of sensory stimuli (air flow and smell) experienced by your right nostril, which reduces some of the input that drives sympathetic tone and the ‘fight-or-flight’ response. This allows more input through the left nostril, increasing parasympathetic tone and allowing you to regulate your nervous system with more ease.

Use this at any time to come into a calmer state and to get yourself out of a patterned ‘fight -or-flight’ response.

From this technique you may experience:
  • Increased neck range of motion, check your neck before you start! (Use the Physical Resonance tests for your neck and shoulder)
  • A sense of calming to you and your body
  • Relaxation of muscles in the head, neck, jaw and back
  • Feeling more grounded, centered, aligned with yourself
  • Increased clarity and ability to focus
  • More balanced physically in your body

Instructions:

  1. Place a portion of a cotton ball or rolled tissue paper in your right nostril.
    1. Rip the cotton ball or tissue to size for comfort.
  2. Keep this in your nostril for ~4 minutes or until you feel a change in how you feel.
    • You may leave the cotton ball in for as long as you like, although it is recommended to note the timing of the technique’s effectiveness. You may find that after prolonged use, the once notable benefits may fade. This does not always happen, but it can especially if this technique is not the only thing that needs to be provided to shift states.

Use this ~1-3x/day for the next 4 days and then as often as desired. * Unless otherwise directed.

  • Optionally, use your testing technique to determine your optimal frequency and duration to perform.
