03. How to Make a Unilateral Bite Plate (Chewing)

Your bite pattern and how your teeth touch, plays a significant role in your ability to sense who and where you are in space. An aligned bite pattern supports your neck, head and jaw integration while enhancing sensory processing and how your body takes in information.

Some Master Guide techniques require a bite plate.

  • Get your inexpensive bite wafer here.
  • To create a single sided bite plate you will need to cut the bite plate so that it is only in contact with your molars on one side (and NOT your canines) following the instructions below.

Instructions to make a unilateral bite plate for one side of your molars:

  1. Place a full bite plate in your mouth.
  2. Using a mirror, look along the left side and roughly measure the length of your molars.
    1. Review the pictures below for teeth anatomy and optimal bite plate sizing.
  3. Cut the bite plate to size and smooth the edges as best you can.
  4. It is very important that there is no contact on your canine teeth. This should only contact your molar teeth.
  5. Place the small unilateral bite plate in your mouth and gentle let your teeth contact the new bite plate surface. Do not clench on the bite plate. Keep it there for 20-30 secs or up to 1-3 minutes at a time then remove. You may also perform a specific breathing exercise or restorative posture while using the bite plate.

Perform 2-3x/day and then as often as desired. *Unless otherwise directly

  • Optionally, use your testing technique to determine your optimal frequency and duration to perform.
