11. Gum Tracing

In order to make sure food doesn’t get stuck between your lips and gums you need to be able to have adequate tongue flexibility and motor control to be able to get into all these crevices. This technique focuses on this ability.

Instructions:

  1. Place the tip of your tongue as high as it can go between your gums and the center of your upper front lip.
  2. Keeping your tongue up as high as you can into the crevice between your gums and lips, run your tongue along the side of your gums. When it reaches the end, move it down the lower gums to trace this section.
  3. When you reach the end, move back up to the upper section tracing back to the upper center. This will have completed an entire circle.
  4. Reverse directions and complete a tongue trace going to the opposite side now.
  5. Complete 5x each direction, 1-3 sets.

Perform 1-3x/day. *Unless otherwise directed

  • Optionally, use your testing technique to determine your optimal frequency and duration to perform.
  • If you are unable to sense contact on the back of the tongue you may have a tongue tie.
